Boroko Commercial Corner

  • Boroko Commercial Corner is envisioned as a contemporary commercial hub that responds directly to the climatic and urban conditions of Port Moresby.

Anchored by a modern supermarket and supporting retail tenancies, the design prioritises comfort, safety, and environmental responsiveness within a dense mixed-use setting. A defining architectural move is the use of blockwork breezeways, which carve porous channels through the building mass to facilitate natural cross-ventilation while maintaining secure, well-defined pedestrian routes. These breezeways act as shaded urban passages, tempering heat and humidity while encouraging movement and visual connectivity through the site.

Wrapping the upper and rear volumes is a continuous architectural screen that conceals the office and back-of-house functions. This layered façade strategy allows the building to present a unified civic face to the street while masking the complexity of its service and administrative components. The screen also acts as a climatic filter, reducing solar gain and softening the building’s overall mass, while introducing texture and depth to the façade.

Together, these elements create a commercially efficient yet environmentally responsive building that balances functionality with urban presence offering a contemporary retail experience that is both legible and comfortably attuned to its tropical context.
