10 LAWSON STREET REDEVELOPMENT
“Urban Veranda” by Clare Design + Studio Workshop Architects
OVERVIEW
The proposed scheme for 10 Lawson Street aims to demonstrate best practice outcomes of:
• Community and Place
• Environmental, Social, and Economic Sustainability
• Technical and Spatial Innovation
The “Urban Veranda” (UV) is developed as a site-specific response, taking inspiration from local precedent and climate, while accounting for key objectives of the new Byron Bay Town Centre Master Plan. The 900m2 mixed-use building offers the community a gesture of urban generosity, achieved through a laneway highlighted with mature trees, a first floor public veranda space, and an optional roof landscape.
The architecture is understated and retrained, composed of timber cladding which echoes traditional vernacular buildings from agricultural and maritime eras of the community, while serving the function of adaptable, passive solar and thermal control. At a technical level, UV is proposed to incorporate Cross Laminated Timber construction (“CLT”) which is an advanced and efficient system with exceptional environmental benefits. Flexibility of use is a key to the building planning, with retail spaces that can be adapted to a range of uses, and residential units that can incorporate a range of types as desired by Council and to suit the evolving needs of the community. -
