Rocabella
-
Rocabella is comprised of two semidetached homes along Hedges Avenue – a significant stretch of coastline in the Gold Coast. Originally a standard 405m2 block, each home is a 200m2 individual title. The images provided in this submission are of the southern dwelling "Roca" with "Bella" being to the north.
Situated on the west side of the avenue, a vertical organisation of spaces was required to achieve views of the ocean above the existing beachfront homes that line the coast. The resulting 5-story form achieves 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, a full level comprising living/ kitchen/dining, and a pool level with alfresco area.
Fundamental to the approach is ensuring all spaces have a fluid connection to the outdoor environment. Generous balconies all feature integrated planting and curving balustrade details which reinforce the distinct geometry of the project.
Rocabella is designed to make an active contribution to the urban environment. In a region not well regarding for meaningful urbanism, the project strives to generate
architecture that is in balance with its context. Responding to the nearby towers of Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise, the height and scale sets a new precedent for the avenue in line with the council's increased density envelope. A language of curving brick suppresses the typical verticality of a blade party wall, uniting the the dwellings into a coherent whole while accentuating the horizontal, tiered balconies.
At the street level, subtly dynamic entry canopy, articulated screen walls and landscaping provide a strong pedestrian connection.
